ABOUT US

The Broadway Trust is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (registration number 1166355), registered by the Charity Commission. It started life as the Broadway Preservation Society, founded in the 1950’s, and changed its name to The Broadway Trust in 1960. It was felt that it would be more effective as a registered charity.

Our Aims

The Trust’s aims, as agreed with the Charity Commission, are:

  •  To encourage high standards of architecture and planning in or affecting the village of Broadway and its surrounding area.

  • To stimulate public interest in the history, architecture, and landscape of the village environs.

  •  To encourage and secure the preservation, protection and improvement of features of historic interest or general public amenity.

  • To support and maintain those amenities necessary for a strong community spirit.

Beauty
The Trust owns land on Broadway Hill, as a result of a generous gift by Mrs de Navarro. In July 1946 Major George Moore, a prominent Solicitor who lived in Farnham House, bought the Lordship of the Manor of Broadway. This included agricultural land and the Manorial wastes in the centre of the village. He sold the agricultural land to local farmers retaining the grassed areas beside the High Street and at St Eadburgha's church. He subsequently bequeathed the Lordship with its grassed wastes to the Broadway Trust. The Trust disposed of the grassed verges above the telephone boxes to the District Council and agreed that the Gravels and car-park at the Swan become adopted. The Trust maintains these grassed areas in conjunction with the Parish Council together with many of the trees and the benches for the enjoyment of residents and visitors.

Planning issues are a concern of many people in Broadway, and the Trust is active in monitoring planning applications, making representations to Wychavon District Council where we have concerns, or consider any applications to be unsympathetic to the character of the village. Current planning news can be found in the Members Area.

The Trust is also active in the production and future reviews of the Neighbourhood Development Plan, and of the South Worcestershire Development Plan.  On all planning matters, the Trust encourages comment from members via the website.

Vibrancy

Broadway faces many challenges in today’s world, and the Trust works closely with local government in the development of the South Worcestershire Development Plan and with the Broadway Neighbourhood Plan to make sure that the future needs of the village for housing, jobs and local amenities still preserve the essential character of the village.

Our village greens are regularly used for a whole variety of events, festivals and entertainment, and are made available at no charge for non-profit organisations. The Trust itself organises talks and social events for members, and to recruit new ones.

Community

The Trust is now in a position to make Grants to local organisations where their aims are consistent with those of the Trust - this basically means where there is a clear and lasting benefit to the community at large.  So far, we have been able to help local schools and offered support to the Broadway Newsletter, and we welcome new applications.

We have our AGM at the Lifford Hall in May and all are welcome, though only members may vote on motions. We welcome the participation of as many residents as possible in our activities, so that we can truly represent the community.  How To Join
